Sir John Soane's Museum was created by the architect Sir John Soane (1753 - 1837) at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields (his home during his lifetime) and has been a public museum since 1837. Preserved by an Act of Parliament in 1833, it survives as an integral whole, its interiors restored and its works of art displayed in the same authentic arrangements as they were in Soane's day. The collections are inseparable from the architecture of the Museum which is a Grade I listed building of outstanding originality, with its picturesque vistas and inventive handling of light and space.
