Mantels by Chesney's

The Chesney’s collection of hand carved marble and stone mantels are internationally recognised as the most comprehensive to be found anywhere.

The range incorporates both historic and contemporary designs. The historical collections provide a lexicon of mantel designs spanning the past four centuries. Renaissance, Elizabethan, Baroque, Palladian and Neo-classical styles are all represented with extensive collections of British Georgian, Regency, Victorian and Edwardian mantels appearing within the range.

Chesney’s also offer a custom service for the manufacture of historic mantels which can be selected from an archive of many hundreds of antique examples or copied from client’s drawings or photographs. Every fireplace in the Chesney’s collection is characterised by the historical authenticity of its design and the outstanding quality of its craftsmanship and materials.

The contemporary collection includes mantel designs by leading fashion, interiors and furniture designers and features the work of household names such as Jasper Conran and Jane Churchill. New designs are regularly added to reflect the changing tastes in interior design and Chesney’s is widely seen as the leading influence in the development of domestic mantel design.

We also offer the manufacture of modern mantel designs on a bespoke basis, a service that is extremely popular with our Interior Designer and Architect clients.

Victorian Mantel Collection

A new freedom in the use of architectural form and ornamentation emerged in the Victorian age which is reflected in the mantel designs of the period.

Regency Mantel Collection

It is the pleasing combination of scale and simplicity that makes the Regency mantel an ideal choice for modern and period rooms, with its restrained ornamentation and simple construction.

Georgian Mantel Collection

Georgian Mantel design was based on the classical orders and followed strict rules of proportion whilst employing a rich and varied range of decorative devices.

French & Italian Mantel Collection

The French Mantel is characterised by its proportions – lower and deeper than those of an English mantel, and by its decoration – particularly when displaying the exuberant Rococo style.

En Trumeau Mantel Collection

An “en trumeau” French mantel will enhance the architecture of any large room. The term en trumeau describes a decorative panel, mirror or the continued section of a fireplace sitting above the mantel shelf.

Stone Mantel Collection

Stone has been the most favoured materials for architecture from the earliest times. Its warm colour and rugged texture make it ideal for fireplaces of every period.

Soane Mantel Collection

A collection of exact replicas of designs for mantels selected from the archives of the world famous Sir John Soane’s Museum and reproduced by Chesneys under exclusive licence from the museum.

Lutyens Mantel Collection

These mantels by Sir Edwin Lutyens have been carefully chosen to show his unique ability to translate the traditional architectural vocabulary into new forms that successfully combine classicism and modernity.

Architectural Mantel Collection

The term “architectural” is used to describe a fireplace which is well proportioned and which has clearly defined strong lines.

Historical Mantel Collection

Over the past 30 years Chesney’s has acquired a worldwide reputation as the premier resource for the finest antique chimneypieces and for its unrivalled collection of historically authentic facsimile chimneypieces.
Restoring an 18th century chimneypiece requires an extraordinary level of skill and patience and there can be no compromise in the process. This rigorous approach to conservation and unique understanding of the antique chimneypiece in all its forms has inspired and guided the development of our range of facsimile chimneypieces.
Our highly skilled and experienced craftsmen employ the full range of skills and techniques that were used in the production of 18th and 19th century chimneypieces, using materials that are as close as possible to the original. These artisanal skills are married with those of the draughtsman and architectural historian in the creation of a collection of museum quality chimneypieces.
